Battling Colts lose to Houghton
Despite the attrocious, muddy conditions, with torrential rain and gusty wind, Seghill and Houghton produced a very entertaining and competative game.
the home side welcomed Craig Smith back into action, just three months after open heart surgery, and the 17 year old had an outstanding game at full back.
Both sides created chances in the first half, with the visitors having slightly more posession. Seghill defended well, with fine tackling from Stephen Gluck, Andrew McLean and man of the match, Brad Glennie. They also came close to tries themselves, when fine runs by Micky Blewitt and Nick Heard were stopped short.
Just before the half time, Seghill lost Dan Townshend to injury, but held firm to make sure the score remained 0-0 at the break.
Micky Blewitt, then limped off at half time, followed by Paul Latham just after the restart, and Seghill played most of the second half with just 12 men.
It was no surprise that Houghton were able to take advantage of their extra numbers, to produce three tries, though late in the game, prop Dan Ruane thought he had scored a consolation try for the depleted Seghill side, when the pack drove him over. However, the referee deemed it a double movement and though Seghill continued to press forward, Houghton defence remained in tact, to record a 19-0 victory.
